Cost of Living in Australia

It is a well known fact that it is less costly to live in Australia than in the USA or the United Kingdom. Australia is a popular destination for students from all over the world. Below is a general guide of the living costs involved.

Food $100 - $200 / week

Overall Cost: Statistics estimate that it costs international students around $AUD 12000 per year for living costs which includes rent, food and transport.

 

Opportunity to Work While Studying

International students can work while studying in Australia but the money you earn should not be used as your only source of income. To be granted a student visa in Australia you need to have adequate means of financial support.

 

International students must know that they are allowed to work maximum of 20 hours a week during the term, and unlimited hours during recognised periods of vacation.

 

Before Applying for a Job

If you were granted a Student visa before 26 April 2008 and have not yet applied for Permission to Work, you and your family members may only apply for Permission to Work after you have started your course in Australia.

 

If you were granted a Student visa on or after 26 April 2008, you and your dependent family members will already have Permission to Work automatically included with your visa.

You need also to obtain a Tax File Number (TFN) to work in Australia. You can obtain a TFN through the Australian Tax Office. You will need to contact them about their requirements and processes.
